When your speech is interrupted, it gives wings to your voice. No statement could be more true than for Evan Schelton. Suddenly affected by a developmental stutter at the age of seven, Evan found himself struggling for every word, every sentence. Almost overnight his speech no longer flowed and his thoughts and dreams were stuck in his head. Unable to express himself as he always had, he adapted by singing what he wanted to say. With the help of an experienced speech pathologist, and multiple therapies and exercises, Evan was encouraged to join a theater group for children as a way to cope and adapt to new speech patterns. This group led him to a vocal coach who quickly discovered an incredible classical voice hidden within his young stuttering vocal chords. Music became Evans primary form of communication. Singing enabled Evan to make people laugh or cry…and feel emotion, while he gained confidence in his voice. He became obsessed with singing and music. At the age of 10 he even tackled “Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera. No piece was too small or too hard. He had his wings! He consistently achieved the highest ratings in local and state vocal competitions. Evan was named the Wichita Arts Council Youth Recognition Award Winner, performed with Music Theater Wichita and was nominated for best high school actor out of 500 productions, for his performance as John Proctor in The Crucible. He was selected to attended both the Manhattan School of Music and The Curtis Institutes Summer programs. Evan has appeared in multiple national commercials, Nickelodeon’s Big Time Rush and several motion pictures acting along side accomplished actors like Ed Harris. Evan is a SAG/AFTRA member. Evan has continued to study voice and for a time was headed for music theater and the thrill of Broadway. At the age of 14, fate stepped in and Evan had the opportunity to perform in the chorus of the Wichita Grand Opera. He performed in operas including Turandot, Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto and Don Carlo. During this time he was able to share the stage with opera legend Sam Ramey, as well as Alan Held and Bill Powers. Evan also had the great honor of playing Flora’s Servant in La Traviata with the Wichita Grand Opera. Evan is currently a Senior at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City studying Classical Voice. He will receive his BA in May of 2023. He aspires to attend conservatory to obtain a Master’s degree in vocal performance. His career goal is to perform on stages around the world. When his travelling career has ended, Evan would like to open a vocal studio in order to help train and mentor you singers in the beautiful world of opera. Contact: Evan Schelton
